Climbing the PvM Ladder in RuneScape: Midgame Bosses That Teach and Reward
Today we're diving deep into Old School RuneScape's midgame PvM (Player vs Monster) content. Today's focus is different - we're looking at bosses that teach core combat mechanics, build your PvM skill set, and prepare you for high-tier content coming later this year.
This is your stepping stone - a guide designed to elevate your bossing knowledge and help you gain confidence, efficiency, and OSRS gold along the way. Whether you're a fresh midgame player or someone brushing up before diving into raids or late-game slayers, these bosses are here to teach you and fund your upgrades.
Let's break down these encounters one by one - what you'll learn from them, why they matter, and what kind of loot you can expect.
1. Barrows Brothers
Requirements: Priest in Peril quest
Estimated GP/hr: ~500k–1M depending on RNG and kill speed
Barrows is the OG midgame moneymaker. It's approachable with basic gear and teaches players about prayer management and switching targets in tight spaces. Thanks to the 2024 update introducing elemental weaknesses, Barrows brothers are now weak to Air spells. This change makes the fight smoother than ever with cheap setups like an Air staff and Wind Blast.
Don't forget the Strange Lockpick from Hallowed Sepulchre - it lets you bypass doors and puzzle rooms, saving tons of time. Key drops to aim for: Ahrim's Robes, Karil's Top, and surprisingly, Dharok's Greataxe, all hovering above half a million GP.
2. Crazy Archaeologist
Location: Wilderness
Estimated GP/hr: ~400k–700k
Teaches: Tile awareness, reaction timing, PvP escape strategies
The Crazy Archaeologist is a low-risk Wilderness boss and a great place to dip your toes into the danger zone. As long as you pray Ranged, the only damage to dodge is from his explosive book attack, giving you practice at recognizing telegraphed AoEs.
To avoid getting KO'd by PKers, always bring a Glory Amulet with the teleport set and don't stand still. The Crazy Arch doesn't drop insane loot, but Ancient Shard pieces and wilderness shield components can rack up to over a million GP per hour with luck.
3. Sarachnis
Location: Forthos Dungeon
Recommended Gear: Arceuus spellbook teleport methods, Arceuus favor
Unique Drop: Sarachnis cudgel, elite clue scrolls
Bonus Item: Arceuus boots
Sarachnis is a laid-back, midgame-friendly boss that's made even easier with Arceuus boots, which negate the web root mechanic. This turns a mildly annoying mechanic into a non-issue, letting you focus 100% on damage output.
You'll be switching prayers based on Sarachnis' movement - Melee when up close and Ranged when she's scuttling around. If you're clue-hunting, this is an S-tier option with a steady trickle of elite scrolls, grubby keys (sell them!), and high-quantity resource drops.
4. Emoxatal
Requirements: Heart of Darkness quest
Teaches: Tick movement, prayer flicking, dangerous tile avoidance
Loot: Mostly Rune items, resource packs
This frost-covered dungeon boss is ideal for refining your reaction time. Mechanics include tile-breaking attacks, ice block summons, and prayer disabling, requiring active prayer toggling and spatial awareness.
Bring a Pendant of Eights, charged with Frozen Tears, for easy access. While the loot isn't amazing, the PvM knowledge gain here is what makes Emoxatal worth your time. Consider this your introduction to "advanced PvM lite."
5. Scurrius (Rat King)
Access: Varrock Sewers
Teaches: DPS checks, prayer discipline, multi-style combat
Unique Item: Scurrius Spine → weapon crafting
Scurrius is a mechanically dense boss with manageable intensity. While Protect from Melee mitigates most damage, you'll also need to recognize and dodge Ranged (green) and Magic (blue) attacks. Debris falls from the ceiling, and the boss can heal with cheese, summoning rats you can tick-kill using ratbone weapons.
It's a fantastic place to build the muscle memory needed for high-speed fights like Zulrah or Vorkath. Plus, his unique weapon upgrades are cool collector's items and useful for XP lamps and clue hunting.
6. Wakkawatu
Access: Katal landing or Pendant teleport
Teaches: Group dynamics, prayer juggling, mechanical coordination
Drops: Dragon Hunter Wand, Wakkawatu Hide, Tome of Earth
Wakkawatu, the dragon-style boss from Varlamore, offers one of the most fun and rewarding group PvM experiences in OSRS. The multi-phase battle includes destroying tail segments, dodging elemental rocks, powering up pillars, and reacting to lightning barrages.
While soloable, this fight shines with friends. The Dragon Hunter Wand and Wakkawatu Hide are high-value rewards, and the rotating mechanics train your eye for raid-style encounters. Bring it into your midgame bossing rotation for both the experience and the loot.7. Royal Titans
Location: Asgarnian Dungeon
Teaches: Dual-boss management, elemental combat, positioning
Duo Recommendation: Highly advised
Unique Reward: Deadeye & Mystic Vigor prayer scrolls
These elemental giants - the Ice King and Fire Queen - are the pinnacle of midgame bossing. Whether solo or duo (duo is strongly recommended!), you'll be juggling attack styles, dodging wall mechanics, and reacting quickly to arena-wide slams during their enraged phase.
The real treasure? Prayer scrolls that upgrade Eagle Eye to Deadeye and Mystic Might to Mystic Vigor. These buffs are locked to you (untradable) but will massively improve your DPS across PvM content. Even the regular loot is excellent - this is a midgame must-do.
8. The Moons (Nephtly Dungeon)
Requirements: Perilous Moons quest
Recommended Gear: Zamorakian Hasta (multi-style), Barrows tank setup
Teaches: Gear swapping, maximizing prayer/defense efficiency
This triple-boss encounter tests your knowledge of attack styles and gear efficiency. Each moon has a different weakness - Crush, Stab, or Slash - making the Zamorakian Hasta a perfect midgame weapon. Switch your attack style accordingly, and take each moon down to roll for their lucrative drop tables.
While not every trip will yield riches, the mechanical complexity and fight pacing are excellent practice for content like God Wars, Nex, and even some raid bosses.
Final Thoughts: Why Midgame Bossing Matters
Midgame PvM is more than just profitable - it's educational. These bosses are your combat classroom, each teaching mechanics that scale up in future content:
·Prayer discipline at Barrows and Scurrius
·Positioning and timing from Emoxatal and Crazy Archaeologist
·Group coordination with Wakkawatu
·Fight pacing and mechanics with the Royal Titans
·By mastering this tier, you're building the reflexes and knowledge base needed for content like Zulrah, Vorkath, God Wars Dungeon, and eventually ToA/ToB.
Most of these bosses can be killed with modest gear, and as you scale up, your earnings snowball - letting you fund Barrows gear, RuneScape gold, upgraded jewelry, and potions for even bigger fights.
